Petrie Turtle Survey

We are conducting a survey of species-at-risk turtles on Petrie Island between May and July 2008. You can help by providing your observations below. Thanks for helping!

The Friends of Petrie Island and the Ottawa Stewardship Council are conducting a survey of species at risk turtles in and around Petrie Island. We need to learn more about the numbers, distribution, and habitat of these turtles, especially the Blanding’s turtle and the Northern Map turtle, both of which have been observed on Petrie Island in past years. Other SAR turtles in Ontario include the Eastern Spiny Softshell, Spotted Turtle, and the Stinkpot (Common Musk) Turtle, however, there have been no reliable reports of these species on the Islands in recent years.

For further details, view the PDF brochure here.

Our study is looking for these turtles within the area described on the map below. If you see a species at risk turtle (alive or dead) in or near this area, please let us know by filling in the online form below, or by sending us an email at petrieturtles2008@fallingbrook.com, or by reporting your observation to the staff at the Petrie Island Interpretation Centre.

Tell us: what kind of turtle you saw; how many; what was it doing (basking in the sun, swimming, nesting, walking, injured, road kill); where you saw it, including either GPS co-ordinates or the grid square from the map below; and the date and time you saw it.
