Petrie Junior Naturalist ProgramThe Friends of Petrie Island and SPIRIT would like to invite children ages 2-6 to attend the Petrie Island Junior Naturalist program. Children accompanied by an adult will spend a fun hour and a half becoming Junior Naturalists by participating in various hands-on activities; hikes, crafts, games, songs. Program for 2008July 11th – 10:00-11:30 am Frogs & Turtles & Snakes “O My!” Don’t be freaked out by their cold bloodedness, scaly skin and long tongues! Amphibians and frogs are seriously “cool”! Come and explore these animal’s homes here on Petrie Island. We will go turtle watching, frog catching, and snake hunting! Remember, spots are limited so please call to register. Meet at the Interpretation Centre.
July 25th – 10:00-11:30 am Signs, Signs, Everywhere Are Signs Ever wonder what animal made the tracks through the mud, chewed on the bark, or caused that horrible smell? Come learn how to identify the animals that live on Petrie Island by examining all the clues they leave behind. Remember, spots are limited so please call to register. Meet at the Interpretation Centre.
August 15th – 10:00 – 11:30 am Insect Safari What has 3 body parts, six legs, and outnumbers humans 200 million to 1? AN INSECT! Come join a park naturalist in search for insects on Petrie Island. We will hunt for butterflies, swish for dragonflies, flip for sowbugs, and bang the trees for whatever else we can find! Bring a net if you have one (a limited number will be available on site). Remember, spots are limited so please call to register. Meet at the Interpretation Centre.
August 29th – 10:00 – 11:30 am Bark Around the Park Did you know that there are over 23,000 kinds of trees in the world? Join us and create a personal “Tree Atlas” and learn about the trees that call Petrie Island home. We will identify trees and wildflowers while making tree rubbings and colourful leaf prints. Remember, spots are limited so please call to register. Meet at the Interpretation Centre.
